Beautifully beaded

Subtle seasonal style

There's never been a better time to be beaded. Don't be a head-to-toe diamante diva this New Year, leave all your clichéd party frocks hanging at home. This season's main party look is all about subtle style: well cut jackets, feminine shoes and lots of beaded, embroidered details and accessories. Vintage beaded capes, scarves and bags are in high demand - visit specialist secondhand shops or buy directly from a bead artists like Linda Shea, for something truly special. You may also be inspired by embroiderer and bead expert, Kanchan. Hailing from north west India, Kanchan uses a wide range of fabrics and employs traditional techniques to create mirrored, embroidered and beaded costumes and pieces which adorn domestic animals for ceremonies and festivals. You can see a collection of her work in 'Mirror, Bead, Thread' at The Museum of St Albans until January 19.
