Save SpitalfieldsOne of Britain's oldest markets and Alternative Fashion Week's venue, will close if controversial new plans to develop offices on the site are successful. The Spitalfields Development Group - which sees the area around the market becoming London's new financial quarter - has put forward a proposal to build over half a million square feet of offices on 3/5ths of the present site. Spitalfields Market has existed since 1683 when Charles II granted a licence to sell "fish, fowl and roots" there. Action group Spitalfields Market Under Threat (SMUT) has launched a petition which already has over 25,000 signatures but desperately needs more support.
