55 seriesThe finale for Alexander McQueen's winter 2001 catwalk show - a box falling open to reveal a naked woman wearing a bizarre gas mask in a cloud of fluttering butterflies - was inspired by one of Joel-Peter Witkin's surreal and macabre photographs. Witkin is just one of the subjects in Phaidon's new 55 series, celebrating different styles and aspects of photography. Each pocket size volume contains 55 key examples of the subject's work, accompanied by extended captions. Also included in the series is fashion photographer George Hoyningen-Huene, street photographer Walker Evans and Nan Goldin, who documents New York's underground culture.
