Happy anniversaryThe Whitechapel Art Gallery celebrates its 100th birthday this month with the Centenary Exhibition (March 21 - May 21). It will feature around 85 paintings, drawings and sculptures selected by a panel - including artist Anish Kapoor - drawn from some of the 725 Whitechapel shows during its first century. Works on display include Lucien Freud's study of the late nightclubber extraordinaire Leigh Bowery, self-portraits by Frida Kahlo, a Rembrandt angel and Andy Warhol's portrait of Jacqueline Kennedy. A documentary space will project landmark artworks and others too fragile to hang or that no longer exist. |
