Numerological artAlthough based on an idea by Leonardo da Vinci, painting by numbers was actually invented in the early 50s by Dan Robbins. The step by step way to create your own masterpieces reached its peak a few years later and today the paintings are exhibited in galleries and traded on auction sites. For a guide to 50 years of this crazy kitsch past-time, seek out William Larry Bird Jr's Paint by Numbers, (£12.95, Princetown Architectural Press) published in April. Bird looks at the artists who created the kits, critics who dissed them and painters who filled them in and hung them on their walls. |
