Jive talking

Youth cultures have always experimented with language and last year trendsetters gave birth to fashion slang, which uses designer names and labels as references. Now it seems that cool cats have rejuvenated hipster slang, otherwise known as jive. The form of slang, which is notoriously difficult to understand, has been around since the 1920s but most people associate it with the currently fashionable 50s era - hence its comeback. If you don't already know what 'make like a fish' and 'mazuma' means, then check out Max Decharne's Dictionary of Hipster Slang. The book is available, priced £9.99, at No Exit.
