Airline cultureIn 1973 male airline bosses demanded that "the girls must be able to wear kinky leather boots and hot pants or they don't get the job". The girls in question were air stewardesses and everything to do with 'airline design and ephemera' is discussed and illustrated in 'Airline: Identity, Design, Culture' by Keith Lovegrove (published by Laurence King, £19.95, available from all good bookshops). Divided into four sections of fashion, food, interiors and identity, the book outlines the changing face of uniforms, for both sexes of trolley dolly, from the 20s to 60s psychedelia courtesy of Emilio Pucci and more sedate styles from Giorgio Armani in the 90s. 'Airline' also gives readers an opportunity to gasp at the flamboyance of 'Playboy' magazine's Hugh Hefner's 'Big Bunny' love nest. |
