Graft'n'glamPaying homage to women from every walk of life, the photographic exhibition 'Graft and Glamour' (The Association of Photographers Gallery, 81 Leonard Street, London EC2, from 20th to 25th November) in association with Corbis, an online provider of digital photography and fine art, explores the roles women perform at work and when on 'display'. The exhibition, a celebration of working women through the ages, mixes snapshots of domestic drudgery, film star glamour, blatant propaganda and grim reality including Marilyn Monroe entertaining GI's in Korea, Marlene Dietrich surrounded by army boys during World War II, a pre-Bowie Iman face-to-face with Jerry Hall and a haughty looking Coco Chanel dragging on a cigarette. The display aims to cast "a witty and trenchant eye on how women's lives and looks have been defined through a camera lens since the earliest days of photography" and is intended as a "stimulating reminder of how women's lives and identities are still fashioned by powerful images in art, photography and the media". |
