Racy TraceyArtist and Vivienne Westwood model Tracey Emin always plays a starring role in her work and a new exhibition 'Billy Childish and Tracey Emin: Alive and well and dying in Chatham' (The Pure Gallery, 1 Leonard Street, London EC2 enquiries 07000 847466, from 8-30 November) is no exception. On show are 40 glamour-style photos taken by photographer Eugene Doyen in the early 80s of a young Tracey, who was then a fashion student. Snapped as Tracey was hanging from a noose or grinning gap-toothed with her dentures in her then boyfriend Billy Childish's jacket pocket or lying beside him on a bed dressed in lingerie and stillies, the photos make Tracey look "glamorous, ugly, alienated and adoring with sadomasochistic elements". Childish, also an artist, arranged the poses as reference material for his paintings and the twosome were apparently "terrifically in love in a sick kind of way". |
