Women in disguiseTo avoid being sexually abused, Brazilian street girls spend their lives disguised as boys. So it's not hard to understand their reluctance to shed their protective disguise, but photographer Leticia Valverdes managed to convince them to pose for her. To coax the street girls in front of her camera, Leticia befriended them with old dresses and make-up which provided the girls with some brief moments of normality and self-awareness. Leticia's thought-provoking results are on show in 'Invisible Lives: Brazilian Street Girls' at the Proud Galleries (5 Buckingham Street, London WC2, enquiries 020 7839 4942) from 17th August to 10th September. An accompanying book will also be published by Vision On Publishing (enquiries 020 7250 1948). |
