Astonishing photography

Under the label "Astonish Me! The Supreme Style of Alexey Brodovitch", the Michael Hoppen Photography Gallery has pulled together quite an astonishing selection of photos. Richard Avedon, Erwin Blumenfeld, Martin Munkasci (forefather of movement in fashion shots) and Iving Penn among them. The link that threads these luminaries together is Alexey Brodovitch, who they worked for and were influenced by. Brodovitch's heydays started in the 30's and continued through to the 60's when he was an influential art director. The layouts he designed for US fashion magazine 'Harper's Bazaar' are considered to be as fresh today as they were in the 30s. Exhibitions runs from 30 March to 31 May at the Michael Hoppen Photography, 3 Jubilee Place, London SW3 3TD, enquiries 0207 352 3649.
