Funky FredFred Perry is well over 40 years-old but the label has brought itself bang up-to-date for spring 2000 with a new collection of authentic sportswear. Reflecting its heritage as the quintessential British sportswear company, the cut for T-shirts and traditional two button tops is slim. Fred Perry, the popular 1930s tennis player, was as passionate playing on court as he was dressing off court. So it's fitting that youth cultures since the 60s have celebrated his sense of style by adopting the Fred Perry label as their attire of choice. Skin Heads, Mods, Soul Boys and Britpop icons have all worn the inimitable laurel wreath logo - supersized on the new range of colourful T's. With prices from £20, it's possible Fred Perry will elbow some of the American big boys - Tommy, Ralph and Calvin - into touch this summer. Fred Perry's authentic sportswear collection is available now from Selfridges in London (400 Oxford Street, telephone: 0171 629 1234) and Manchester (1 The Dome, Trafford Centre, telephone: 0161 629 1234) from mid-February. For further stockists call 0171 307 5000. |
