 | How can you look great without trying too hard? Check out our quick-fix guide to hot buys for spring 2002. |
Corduroy
Spring 'tis the season to applaud cord - it's the core fabric in many of the coolest catwalk collections, from Marc Jacobs to Chloe. It's ideal for the folkloric look that's currently ruling the streets and as it's easy to wash and wear and wear. Sound cord buys at the moment include handbags (check out TopShop for £20), calf-length skirts and culottes and blazers. Look for tailored, blazer style jackets and add a chunky leather belt for extra interest.

Beaded kiddie purses
We're not talking cartoon kitsch - the Hello Kitty and Rainbow ranges are just sad commercial exploits to be avoided. Instead, seek out accessories as used by real kids. These beaded zipped purses are a design classic and can be picked up for as little as 49p in the Pocket Money section of the John Lewis' toy department. They're the perfect antidote to all those hideous Louis Vuitton accessories which can be spotted everywhere from council estates to country ones.

Junk jewellery
Think trash without the trailer. While some people are still into gaudy nameplate necklaces, chunky ID bracelets and signet rings, junk jewellery has moved on. Faux precious metals will not only bring you out in a rash, but are past their sell-by. Instead hunt out some obvious trash - plastic bangles, plastic rings, fun brooches and badges that are cheap and look it. Let foolish rich people pay a small fortune for Jade Jagger's range from Asprey and Garrad - the smart money is on market stall precious junk.

Bizarre belts
Last year it was all about studded leather belts around rock chic waists. For this spring, you want to let your imagination run riot. Wear tie patchwork suede belts with tassels, macrame belts, belts made from old scarves which hang down your thighs and even belts around your body . Sounds bizarre? Nah, it looks great. Be inspired by Julian Cope's bullet belt across the chest look circa 'Reward' 1981. |
Espadrilles
This spring footwear gets laid back and peasant-like. Team your slouchy, layered outfits with
wedge heeled espadrilles, because the sandals which originate from Spain and were big in the 70s are back once again. Look out for the classic jute styles which tie up the leg.
They look great with tiered skirts, jeans and floor sweeping denim skirts. And they don't cost much either - perfect.
