Sheila was born in 1970 in Oldham (also famous for Mark Owen and Lisa Stansfield) and has nine siblings. She studied fashion at Middlesex and then, after having her applications to both Central Saint Martins and The Royal College rejected she went to work for Hussein Chalayan as studio and production manager. After this she went to Saint Martins for her MA in fashion womenswear.
Her own-name label has been an instant success. Shown off-schedule during Fashion Week February 2000 her first collection was showcased in the window of London's Brown's Focus boutique ( this Fashion Week Maloney will be honoured with her own window in Selfridges, Oxford Street). For inspiration Maloney looked to her school days and created a series of humorous pieces showing a great eye for details, as well as superb tailoring skills. Skirts have visible frilly neon petticoats, jackets feature scalloped cut detail and there are gorgeous woollen blazers alongside funky 'Mr Baxter' jogging pants. She has sold a range to Whistles and her clothes were chosen to appear in the 'Beautiful' exhibition at the Oxo Tower earlier this year.
Sheila was awarded the Marks and Spencer New Generation Award for her autumn 2000 collection. For spring/summer 2001 she offers 'Domestic Science' a "charming" collection featuring tailored swimwear inspired by the 1920s, puff sleeve blouses with candy striped bow ties and granny sweaters. The ballet and dance company Supadance has designed a range of shoes for 'Domestic Science'.
Each season Maloney creates a book of ideas and inspirations containing everything from fabric samples to abstract thoughts. She lives in Brixton and when she is not designing her own collection, works as a consultant for an Italian manufacturing company.
