Siereks

Introducing a freaky fashion family from Poland who love laundry bags and ripped posters. Be inspired or be afraid, the Siereks couldn't give a toss either way.

The first Siereks collection was unveiled on the pavement outside the Victim Boutique and Gallery on Fashion Street in East London. It demonstrated the label's mission to "make the ugly pretty and the mundane unique" by taking an everyday affordable item and turning into a reference point for an entire collection. Siereks reprinted the laundry bags' checks onto cotton and silk to create a series of playful outfits and accessories. An A-line circle dress (think Chalayan) was presented alongside a checked cotton catsuit, a plastic collared swimming costume and an 'art installation' dress. Men's pieces included a nifty shirt with one side straight and the other side twisted, and sleeveless backless tops.

The autumn/winter 2002/3 collection was shown at Propaganda, a cavernous bar on Soho's Wardour Street. The clothes, the attitude and the presentation were all bonkers. The womenswear resembles a post-apocalyptic interpretation of cigarette girls and Geishas. Grungey yet glamorous, geometric yet raw and random. The menswear has echoes of farm boys and IT workers. It has the look and feel of a collection created frantically in moments of madness. Swathes of table cloths are twisted around torsos. Mini braces appear on tops, there are dresses made from a few dozen pillows, shoes like hooves and headdresses and footwear made from ripped paper.

Some of the audience gawped, some smiled and everyone seemed to gasp at least once. The mad music encapsulated the vibe perfectly - especially a track featuring a Japanese women singing her version of The Smiths' Girlfriend In a Coma. Surreal.

The label has been a big hit in Japan and the laundry bag collection is currently being sold in three of Tokyo's coolest shops. It's also available from shops in Paris, Milan and of course London, where the three Polish siblings behind the label all live and work.
