His involvement in his fashion goes even further. The seed was first planted when a young Pierre would "thumb through copies of 'Vogue'. I was caught by the colours, the shapes and the fabrics." By the time he was 23, Pierre had completed stints at Paquin, Schiaparelli and Christian Dior. After presenting his first own label haute couture collection in '53 it's fast forward to 1959 and Pierre takes the unprecedented step of showing a ready-to-wear collection, the first time a big cheese designer had.

The resulting furore for this heinous crime caused PC to be expelled from the Haute Couture Trade Union. Needless to say a few years later and all big name designers followed his footsteps. Pierre says of it now, "I had my own couture house with my rich clients. I thought 'what can I do now'? I wanted to work for the 'street'. When I saw images of the Queen shaking the public's hands or people sitting alone in a cinema, I wanted to bring everyone together. I sensed something had to change so my ready to wear was a political as well as business decision."
