As well as the furniture - think grand scale, mirror shiny in citrus or sombre lacquer - the exhibition also includes some sculptural fashions - a spiky-backed swing coat and leather Foreign Legion-style uniforms. Although his furniture company 'Environment' was launched in the 70s, Pierre's interest in furniture reaches back 70 years, "when I was seven, my friend and I used to help his father, who was a carpenter, cut wood. We'd spend days off school helping out and that's how I got interested." Furniture doesn't go all the way to defining these chunky 'objets', which are more sculpture than furniture, hence the exhibition's name 'functional sculptures'.

As Monsieur Cardin states, "my work is the same quality all over. It must work all over just like a piece of sculpture and not just look good from the front." Viewing his furniture in this exhibition for the first time, Pierre considers, "the pieces look just like buildings or a city in the desert." And his reason for returning to furniture after a break of of almost 20 years is matter of fact: "I just fancied doing it again. I thought it would be nice to bring some life back to the furniture I first created in the 70s."
