Modstock 2004

Over three days in May 2004 Modernists from far flung places gathered for the second ever Modstock festival (the first was five years ago in Germany) at London's Rocket Club. The Bar Italia Scooter Club organised a smooth cruise through central London with 100+ scooters followed by a competition to find the best Vespa, Lambretta and best Mod Scooter (won by a very proud Dave Wall from the Nottingham Scooter Club). Inside the club on Holloway Road, young Mods from small towns in Austria, Toyko, Paris and Belfast danced to their sounds and shopped at the record and fashion stalls. Original 1960s Fred Perry's, Lord Anthony trousers, vintage Hush Puppies and sunglasses were all on offer from dedicated sellers who could wax lyrical about preferred Mod labels and tailors of old.

The Mod movement isn't full of saddos reliving their youths - many of the people we met were fairly new to the scene, coming through the network of scooter clubs, or getting into it through the music and the style. Antwerp is hosting a festival in November - for more info on what's happening in Mod land, check out these websites:
