The big trouser story for winter is a pair of good, old fashioned cords. Although with the styles and colours on offer you don't and won't have to look stuffy. And the ever-dependable pair of jeans has been enlivened with contrast stitching. For comfort and added feel appeal there's tracky bottom styles or padded trousers.

Cords
Even if they bring back memories of geography teachers schlepping around in the same faded pair for years, you can't budge for cords this winter. Although, far removed from anything a geography teacher would slip into are Reiss' jumbo cords in cerise pink, lavender or turquoise. If you don't fancy standing out, Reiss also has combat style cords in navy, bottle green and pale grey. Carharrt has stuck with the muted navy, fawn, grey and forest green palette. And Benetton and Uth's cords are jean-cut in black, pale grey, pale brown. French Connection has put a drawstring waist on its terracotta pair.

Jeans
Want to avoid the cords route? You're in luck as there are alternatives: jeans, with contrast stitch detailing, or jean-style, trousers. TopMan's dark'n'baggy jeans have white stitching in arcs over thighs and knees and Uth's have red lines stitched down the legs. Another option is French Connection's jeans, in orange tinged denim, complete with flaming orange stitching. For jean-cut trousers try Uth, Ted Baker, Bennetton or Reiss. Benetton's moleskin jean cut trousers come in wintry shades as do Uth's, who've added shiny knee patches. At Reiss, it's felted wool jean cut trews in rich brown and at Ted Baker in slate grey. Hope & Glory's version, in boiled wool, comes in a variety of sludgy shades from black to army green.

Comfort
For a liberal dose of built in comfort try padded, fleece lined or tracky bottom style trousers. Boxfresh's tracky bottom styles in brown wool suiting or navy rubberised cotton have snug elasticated waists. Both Hope & Glory and Burro have padded their cotton trousers, the former in brown or grey and the latter in stone and navy. Mexx has lined a pair of beige trousers with fleece for extra comfort and warmth. For trousers that are easy to get into and out of, All Saints wins with its brown felted wool numbers that zip all the way up and down the outside leg.
