Broadly speaking outerwear this winter falls into three categories: duffle or overcoats, variations on the parka and over-the-head artist-style smocks. But whichever style you plump for, be it a more smart and formal look or street-style casual, you're not going to be stuck for choice.

Coats and duffels
If you want a coat that's formal but that'll give you the air of a funky Sherlock Holmes, try Uth for neat collared single breasted coats in jumbo check tweeds. Uth also has Crombie-style coats in black with red thread stitching or camel with black stitching. For smartness Reiss' single breasted 3/4 length coats in camel, navy and brown fit the bill. Hope & Glory's chunky padded duffle coat will keep you warm without making you like an overgrown schoolboy.

Parkas
Hooded parkas, some Mod-style others all weather terrain styles, abound. For an Arctic explorer look, try Mexx which has super-sized and super-coloured (orange, yellow or white) parkas and trimmed the hoods with fake fur. Mexx also has a full-length black padded'n'hooded coat with a sunshine yellow fleece lining. Hope & Glory's navy or olive green parkas complete with peaked cap hoods will cast you right back to Scott of the Antarctic days. With their knitted linings and voluminous pockets, Reiss' parkas look stylish army issue. Boxfresh's padded long line jackets will also keep you toasty.

Smocks
For warmer days there are plenty of artist-style smocks, some with hoods others without. Boxfresh's, both hooded and not, come in wintry greys or black, and are either rubberised or crunchy cotton and lined with electric blue fleece. Carhartt's roomy over-the-head numbers in soft red or mid-blue have equally roomy front pocket. For ease of getting on and off, Hope and Glory has placed an asymmetric zip down the front. Uth's smock is made from the traditional Mackintosh fabric, ensuring that it's completely waterproof. While Reiss has left the hoods off its funnel neck smocks and placed big zip-up pockets on the front.
