winter 2000-2001: essential looks for men

Cocooning yourself in a layer of sheep's finest this winter isn't going to be hard. There's plenty of the knitted stuff to choose from: will it be a touch of modern day 70s geek chic with a tank top? Maybe one of grandad's wardrobe staples, a cardigan? Or perhaps a hand-knitted sweater that looks like granny just cast it off her knitting needles for her favourite grandson?

Cardigans

More often than not with this winter's cardis, there's a matching jumper for the epitome of English primness-twinset-vibe. Uth's cardi's are V-necked (in slate grey or brown), with a strip of cable work down one side plus a jumper to match. Reiss has gone all Argyle with diamond patterns in heather colours - purples, turquoises and browns and again has crew or polo neck jumpers to match. Burro's are pretty close to the traditional round necked twinset cardi, but come in clashing colour mixes like olive, khaki and pink.

Tank tops

Not much can be done to such a basic garment, but the tank top has been brought up to date with some nifty detailing - exposed seaming, Argyle patterns, heavy ribbing. Although for a pure vintage 70s version, Mexx's in brown and purple stripes is the business. Reiss has splashed its Argyle pattern on some tanks and a shoulder seam detail on others and Burro's are loose and long line in red, petrol or stone with a shoulder zip detail. Save for its high V-neck and heavy ribbed waist, TopMan's tank top would teleport you straight back to Lower V while All Saints' tank tops have a funky detachable collar.

Hand-knits

It doesn't matter whether they have actually been hand-knitted, this winter's sloppy Joe jumpers just look like they are. Try Burro or French Connection for roomy sweaters, with snugly hoods in gnarly two-tone wools, oranges, browns or green. Boxfresh's zip-up hooded top in black and Nigel Hall's thick ribbed navy roll neck with front pockets have been given an 'aged' look with the wool all bobbly. For a shot of colour in darker days, try Ted Baker's chunky roll neck in turquoise. Or if you want some wit with your function, Hope & Glory takes the prize with its grey or navy roll neck with a hat buttoned to the shoulders. For the less adventurous Hope & Glory also has gnarled wool funnel necked jumpers in olive or navy. In shades of red or black and white, All Saints loose knit crew neck comes with a removable polo neck collar.
