Trousers are comfortable and functional for summer. Two-in-one combos, - long unzipping to shorts - drawstring waists and easy to wear colours, mean there's something for all. To complete the look you'll need a couple of basic extras - a funky hat and a bag for your urban survival kit.

Trouser colour
Unlike shirts, colours and prints haven't generally made it onto trousers. Labels have gone for muted colours, which can be livened up with a loud shirt. At Dockers, khaki, navy and olive are big news. Box Fresh and Pepe have also gone for olive green, as well as pale grey and pale blue. Ted Baker, Hope and Glory also have the olive green shade, together with black and grey. In contrast, Mexx offers splashes of vibrant orange in amongst the cream and navy. And Uth has a dusky pink, but don't be put off as they also have olive, stone, black and navy.

Trouser details
Drawstrings have been big for a couple of summers, and still are - on both hems and waists. Pepe and Ted Baker have drawstrings on waists and hems. At Reiss, Mexx Hope and Glory and Ben Sherman (at Top Man) they're on waists. Quicksilver and Box Fresh have elasticated and drawstring waists combined. Uth and Mexx have smarter, dressier trousers with drawstring waists. Combats are pretty scarce, but 'combat style' details are everywhere - side pockets, horizontal knee pleats, seaming details and reinforced patches. Dockers regular pants have reinforced patches on thighs, backside and knees, with zip details at ankles.

Mexx's drawstrings have knee pleat details, as do Uth's and Ted Baker (also with knee patches). Pepe, Hope and Glory and All Saints all have horizontal knee pleat detailing. Pockets that once stood out on the side of trouser thighs have moved to the backside of trousers. Uth, Box Fresh, Hope and Glory, All Saints and Ted Baker have all used this detail.

Trouser length
As with drawstrings, cropped to the knee or mid-calf trousers have been around for a couple of seasons - but now the streets are flooded with them. Pepe and All Saints have a choice of full length trousers where the lower leg can be unzipped to create mid-calf trousers - Stussey's unzip into shorts. Uth has a choice of full length or mid-calf. As do Hope and Glory, Mexx, Duck and Cover - all available from SU214.
