spring/summer 2000 - essential looks for men.

It's time to give trainers a rest this summer. There are plenty of mules, sandals and lace up shoes around to take their place. Some are downright sensible - but not boring - some border on trainer style, just in case you can't be without them. Whichever you choose they're practical and stylish.

Mules

Birkenstock slip-ons were popular a couple of summers back. Now everyone worth their salt has variations on offer. Acupuncture has two streetwear-styles of mule: Mr Ji - quilted with velcro fastening buckle and thick rubbery sole - or Boozey Lou, in olive, black or light blue nubuck, with a lace and toggle detail at the heel. A dressier option is Wafers Minot mule, in grey or beige, with punched hole detail on the upper. Merrell has three sporty mules, from £55 - Jungle Slide, Jungle Slide Ventilator and Jungle Slide Breeze. The Slide comes in suede while the Ventilator has cut out airtex details on the upper - Breeze's upper is all airtex. Kickers and Shelley's shoes also have summer mules.

Sandals

Whether it's a super-chunky trainer style or a sedate 'school boy' style, these sandals are going to make a statement and let the air in. Constructed from a mesh material, Acupuncture's Avid Brown, in black or brown are the chunkiest, with three big straps, a covered toe and ridged sole. Wafer has a similarly chunky sandal, Kasai in black or grey. Camper has two variations on the 'smart school boy' sandal, named Brothers and Geographica. Schoolboy imagery aside, these smart brown sandals have been updated with velcro fastening buckles. Another Camper sandal, Mix, is more casual affair with its zip fastener and fat heel cushion for urban protection.
