Another reason why she didn't like doing industrial design was that it is very technical. "I'm not technically minded, you have to pay attention to detail and you're not free to do whatever you like", Lara explains. She knew jewellery would bring her the freedom of expression she needed. So in 1994, armed with her portfolio Lara came to London and won a place on the MA in Metalwork and Jewellery at the Royal College of Art. Being no stranger to London - she'd visited friends here before - and being able to speak English fluently, everything was set for her and her future career.
Lara's MA was a time of experimentation and commercial issues weren't a major concern. This is one of the reasons she believes very little jewellery was sold at her degree show: "I wasn't really designing for people to buy, I just wanted to create an 'image'." Her futuristic designs at the time included silver plated headphones, spikey cage visors and neck braces. After graduating from the RCA in '96 things looked up and Lara's first commission was designing plastic cuffs for a Michiko Koshino advertising campaign.
