GFW reports
Kirsty Mitchell, 25
BA (Hons) Fashion Textiles
Ravensbourne College
Using two sources of inspiration - "a photo shoot involving blurred transparent images of people sitting and walking around solid objects" and descriptions from Anita Brookner's book Hotel du Lac, Kirsty describes her collection as "extremely feminine, but darkly romantic and with a Gothic feel". Having experimented with enamel spray (Kirsty secured sponsorship from its makers, Plasti-kote), Kirsty has applied it to chiffon and organza to create sculptural shapes and is interested in its resulting opaque and translucent qualities depending on the amount of enamel spray used.
Kirsty worked for Alexander McQueen during her first year and likened the experience "to meeting Madonna ". Her two years of studying historical dress at the London College of Fashion stood her in good stead during her interview and says, "You'd be given a piece of 18th century wallpaper and asked to design a print. I learnt heaps about print and did layouts for ties, T-shirts and embroidery. It was a total inspiration." Other work experience included working for Hussein Chalayan on his infamous table dress and Kirsty says, "I'd like to work in a design house coming up with ideas for show pieces and overcoming problems." That's if Kirsty does not end up working for electrical giant, Philips, "For the past five years Philips has been developing a clothing line encompassing technology - embroidery which changes colour when you touch it - and it's looking for a womenswear designer. I've got through to the second round of interviews." But first Kirsty wants as much exposure as possible from Graduate Fashion Week, "my opening outfit is a bit of a show stopper so a pic in the paper would be great".
