Designer: Lara Bohinc Matthews
Date of Birth: 10/1/72
Place of birth: Ljubljana, Slovenia.
Background: I studied at the Academy for Fine Arts, Ljubljana, Slovenia and the Royal College of Art (Jewellery and metalwork), London, UK.

What is your spring/summer 98 collection inspired by?
Aeroplanes, water, science and mermaids.

Name the 3 most important influences on your designs.

  1. London.
  2. The colour red.
  3. My husband, Simon and my friend Roger Lee.

What's your favourite accessory?
Shoes. One can't live without them.

Which celebrity would you most like to see wearing your designs?
Any - they are just people. I'd like interesting, creative and intelligent people to wear my designs.

What frustrates you most about fashion?
Fickleness, clique-iness and the idea that fashion is so important when it's not really. It's all about looking good which is not such a big deal after all.

What would you be if you weren't a designer?
A movie star.

What is your spring/summer 98 collection inspired by?
The haunting 1959 Antoinoni film, 'L'Avventura'. Set at the end of summer, blue/grey skies reveal stormy clouds and black rocky islands which stand alone in a vast ocean. A group of friends are cruising the Mediterranean and stop at an island to swim. A young woman from the party disappears and it's never revealed whether she has survived or drowned.

Name the 3 most important influences on your designs.

  1. Family & friends.
  2. The culture and atmosphere of different countries.
  3. New fabrics and shape.

What's your favourite piece of clothing?
A black metallic lace half-lined dress from my own spring/summer 98 collection because it feels cool, light weight and very sexy.

Which celebrity would you most like to see wearing your designs?
I would like to see a strong beautiful woman like Helena Christensen in one of my dresses on the cover of 'Vogue'.

What frustrates you most about fashion?
Nothing. I love it.

What would you be if you weren't a fashion designer?
Idealistically, an interior designer. Realistically I'd probably be a chef like my father, creating exciting new dishes. Maybe I could put the two together and be the next Terence Conran.
