Mari Otberg's justMariOt off-piste London Fashion Week debut creatively merged poetry, film and a ballet performance by dancers from the English National Ballet into an altogether different fashion experience. Her spring/summer 02 collection, entitled Pearl in a Battlefield, features distinctive though wearable designs in linen, denim, cotton and silk. Tailored jackets are scattered with rosettes sprinkled with pearls and decorated with long ribbons, distressed denim is teamed with chalk white ruched cotton shirts and A-line skirts are covered in delicate tongue-in-cheek embroidery. Colours are a subdued mix of plain white, black, beige and light blue with some bold statements of bright red. German-born Mari, who's lived in London since 1998 and worked for top Brit designer Vivienne Westwood, takes ideas from her own dreams, love stories and real life situations and translates them into humorous designs that "speak for themselves".
