Red or Dead
Shepherd's Bush, Tanzania and a European top security prison are all high
on Red or Dead's millennial agenda. Never one to shy away from issues,
tissues or dish cloths, Wayne has taken his recycling principles one step
further this season, offering Jay cloth tops, exotic frocks and pinafores
constructed from beaded car seat covers.
The show's art director, Greg Faye, leapt onto the stage wearing a bird
costume before Sam Fox appeared looking every inch a tart in a tassled
dress and more make-up than Boy George. The catwalk then transformed into a
celebration of African London. Beautiful girls sported batik, cheesecloth
and explosive cotton prints. Stunning accessories included wooden sandals,
sack shoes and macrame hair pieces constructed by Charles Worthington. Body
Shop founder, Anita Roddick, made an appearance wearing a sack-inspired
outfit to much applause.
Spiralling back to the beginning of time, Red or Dead takes the Stone Age
and gives it a New Age look resulting in rough pieces in raw fabrics -
leather, suede, muslin and hessian. The final section pays homage to
terrorist Erica Meinhoff of the Baader Meinhoff gang whose prison attire
provides the basis for denim apron dresses, fingerprint T-shirts and Jay
cloth scarves and skirts. Menswear features slouch pants, tunic tops and
deafening prints on shirts and trousers. The show ended with a voice-over
telling the audience to "fuck off".
