Although still a very glamorous affair, Julien Macdonald's latest collection is distinctly lacking in the gem-encrusted gowns he's become famous for. Instead, the designer has created a much more tailored range for autumn which is sultry rather than shiny. A black bias-cut negligé dress, several sharply cut suits in royal blue and a puffball fur coat are the pieces likely to be popular with the more modest of Macdonald's vast celebrity clientele. However, although the collection has a very strong commercial appeal, it also includes more flamboyant pieces such as a Treacy-esque Union Jack top hat and a red and black boa constructed from plastic strips. Other highlights include a Pearly Queen outfit, Brando-inspired leather caps and tight trousers with a marbled tiger print.
