Although not on the official Fashion Week schedule, Marcus Constable's debut show attracted a good crowd and sponsorship from Ben Sherman. The presentation was minimal - no gimmicks, spangly staging or other distractions, just good lighting and loud music. Themed around the wardrobe of a librarian the collection doesn't groove with glamour but instead focuses on wearable separates including blouson jackets, skirt suits, knits and innovative trousers. Hipsters, baggy jeans with bum flaps, 3/4 length belted trousers with funky pouches and trousers with front vents rising to the thigh are all here, beautifully cut and crisply executed. Boiler suits are revamped and feature low slung metal belts, front pockets and wide-legged trousers. Corduroy is the fabric king of this collection appearing in trouser suits, flouncy full circle skirts, short jackets and dresses. The colour palette incorporates black, kingsfisher blue, forest green, camel and a dash of pink. Many pieces are uncompromisingly conservative (ideal for librarians!) including 80s style blouses and blousons, graph paper check prints and A line skirts. Constable's talent shines through in the trousers and detailing.
