The sound of eerie violins, whispering winds and 15 different mobile rings (contributed by the audience) helped to introduce the highland winter theme of Dai Rees' latest collection. Thick wool, stiff leather and sheer cotton feature heavily in shades of sage, strawberry pulp, camel, cream and storm blue. The bulk of the collection includes jackets, dresses, slacks and knee length skirts worn with heels in a 50s-esque fashion but the strongest influence seems to come from the good old Aaron sweater. Chunky knots make the odd appearance in the form of a weave or decoration and winged-knackered-old-cardy sleeves also crop up. Patterns and details are kept to a minimum and attention focused on the severe but flowing cuts of outfits designed to brave the elements. The only pieces which betray Rees' quest for warmer winter clobber are paper thin knee length dresses which feature downwards slits on the chest, but then, you could always stick a jumper over the top.
