University of Derby
A variable mixture of hit and miss design appeared on Derby's catwalk but overall the University's offerings are promising. Whilst several students seem to have turned to a tired tropical theme for the inspiration behind their collections, some have been much more playful. In particular, Leighton Stevenson's collection raised several smiles due to its obvious influences which include astronauts, BMX bikes, Elvis and The A-Team and highlights of his range include a knitted sweater featuring Mr T's mug and a pullover studded with the star's 'Crazy Fool' slogan. Sometimes simple ideas are the best.
Another prominent collection shown was created by Ervin who's past work experience with Alexander McQueen, Luella and Boudicca is clearly evident in her work. Although Ervin has cited Grace Jones and Roxy Music as the main inspirations of her graduate collection, the garments could easily belong in the wardrobe of a dominatrix horse-whore. The Orient also influenced several graduates including Helen Cooper whose prettily appliqued kimonos are wonderfully detailed and Kerry McClusky who has created a simple and delicate range based on her visit to Bali.
