University of East London

A recurring theme at The University of East London's show is ragged edges and inside out 'unfinished' seams, cropping up as they do on linen, denim and wool for both men and women. First up with the fraying technique is Faye Arnold's softly tailored holiday wear collection - her mint green linen jacket and loose white trousers both sport it. Jill Moore is also in a frayed mood - jeans, denim skirts (both trailing coloured ribbons) and a felted wool dress are hacked into rough edges. Vicki Hawthorne sidesteps the frayed look and instead supersizes her cream, pale green and peach menswear into a relaxed, loose silhouette with extra long sleeves, wide fluid trousers and floppy shouldered jackets. In a more delicate vein and minus any rough edges is Cheryl Hayes whose pale pink and white collection comprises hipsters with bands of lace wound around the legs, pale pink cardis and layered chiffon and silk skirts. Chopping, cutting and reconstruction is the mainstay of Sajidah Master's chunky menswear - his lilac Arran knit coat is hacked into squares and re-constructed with inside out seams, purple jumpers have similar seams picked out in orange. Philippa Griffiths takes the ragged look to an extreme. Her models stomp moodily around and snatch a rag doll from each other whilst wearing skirts and dresses sewn out of strips of pink and brown rags.
