University of Brighton

A mix of printed, knitted and woven textiles together with fashion design make up the University of Brighton collections. Eschewing conventional yarns, Karl Pinfold uses coffee brown leather to knit intricate but tough and sexy mini dresses or fashions it into macrame-style discs to make a barely there jacket. For woven textiles, Lisa Spencer reworks a classic Prince of Wales-style check in steel and copper wire to give the fabric movement and metallic shine while Zsuzsanna Gardini weaves pleated fabrics in gunmetal greys or browns shot with red and sparkling stripes to create dramatic glamour. Created under the concept of 'Fight Club' is Ben Stubbington's take on urban menswear. In a bid to create distortion and alter silhouettes, a pale grey jacket's side zips unzip from hips to wrist, forming a poncho and low slung navy trousers have pockets which run from front to back. In full contrast to 'Fight Club' is the delicacy of Rosa Sian Heath's evening wear of dip dyed pinky white dresses, cream satin hip buttoning floaty trousers and puff sleeve satin dresses. Samantha Lovell's cheekily OTT collection, in black with splashes of screaming cerise, closes the show - a linebacker shouldered all in one trouser suit, pleated skirt fronted trousers, a mohair bell shaped dress with its sleeves attached to the hem and basket weave crinoline.
