Surrey Institute
Jeff Banks compered this eclectic show by the Surrey Institute which had more sponsors than graduate collections. Inspirational sources spanned tropical vegetation, Brighton, 'The Piano' and refugees. Joseph Pollard's 'Ladies clothes for sitting down on chairs in' is fun and formidable featuring preppy blazers, panelled skirts and wonderful wooden prints. High drama and deep glamour characterises Maria Warren fabulous icy shaded collection in sheepskin, wool and raw silk. Patrik Patel succeed in his aim of exploring the dignity of refugees by creating itinerant outfits that oozed style with blanket coats, wraps and clever use of sheepskin. Julie Young's 'Pick 'n' Mix' is candy coloured playtime in wool featuring vast oversized cable knit legwarmers and matching sleeveless mini dresses. Amrik Chagger pays homage to the evolution of tailoring showing the journey of a handcrafted jacket. Ben Shine has been hotly tipped as a designer to watch and his 'Realised' collection injected some go-go dancer sexiness into the end of the show.
