Somerset College
Somerset College put together a varied show encompassing different styles and approaches to fashion. Some students produced deceptively simple yet stunning collections which didn't try to be too clever. Lorraine Bissell's 'Indian Wrapsody' eveningwear in purple and aqua lycra was draped asymmetrically Greek style. Meanwhile Gemini Harper's meringue net skirts with long devore tabard panels and slip style tops, reminiscent of 18 century gowns, were simply beautiful. Other students, including Sarah Ford and Lindsey Harrison, twisted traditional British fabrics and styles into modern edgy creations. Cat Zollo's collection of black lace and pinstripe outfits was well-constructed and styled but unfortunately Dolce & Gabbana have been doing the 'Mafia widow' look for years. Michelle Price's interpretation of the Vampire was far from Goth - in fact her silk wine and black eveningwear is disappointingly tame. In a strange collection, that consisted of diverse designs including multi-hooped dresses and sleeves, baggy 80s style suits and high waisted bell dresses, Joanna Pinhey explored the life cycle of insects. Like several students showing this week, Nicola Court's racy lacy collection was inspired by Latin music and the heyday of couture. The highlight of the show was Shirley Kung's cute and cuddly bedspread-like knits which cross traditional Chinese costume with babywear.
