Ravensbourne College

Ravensbourne kicked off Graduate Fashion week 2000 with a showing of promising talent despite a total power failure halfway through the show. Although students explored different styles and themes, the 1980s was a recurring influence. Cassie Robinson's collection features rags, ruching, gathers and calf-length skirts - think Bucks Fizz on acid. Ida Modigh showed more ruching and other intricate and unusual fabric details, including woven ribbons and lattice pattern tucks and pleats. Angela Friend played with pleats, high necks, pie-crust collars - more streetwise Lady Diana than Pepsi and Shirley. The glam side of the 80s also featured in Sarah Hoggard's ruched-up mint green, brown and eggshell blue and brown PVC and knitted outfits that screamed '80s disco'. This was a wonderful collection that was both punchy and bitchy. Sarah Markham is on a crusade to bring back legwarmers with stilettos, which looked fresh and daring with her trapeze shape skirts and coats. Menswear was also taken back to the 80s courtesy of Lee 'D.O.G' Tully's old skool hip hop looks, whilst other menswear shown was similar and dull - all baggy denim, chunky knits and wide trousers. Although there were no 'conceptual' collections shown, there were plenty of crazy elements, notably Ceren Turkistanli's cut-out clothes doll looks and Toni Millen's ethereal, pretty but disturbed flowered-up creations which came with models holding flowers in their mouths.
