Derby College

The majority of Derby graduates seem to have their feet firmly on the ground, producing wearable and commercial collections. The cute childrenswear shown was a case in point, in particular Melanie Evans' scarecrow-inspired kiddies' collection which was original and wearable. Sara Radcliffe's Creole collection of babe dresses and men's zoot suits was commercial but avoided the kitsch latin look. Other students seemed to be too influenced by their fashion idols. Sarah Hooley, who showed hotpants with cowboy hats, rhinestones and glitzy low cut dresses and tops, could be sued by Chloe, whilst Christopher Kelly's leather pieces were reminiscent of Tristan Webber. And it isn't even a top designer but 'New Look' that seems to have inspired Rachel Hoggard's 'out-on-the-town' black, gold and green ensembles.

Other students used ancient civilisations as inspiration. Francis Kari Goddard produced stunning knitted and sheepskin pieces for larger women based on Celtic/Nordic ice queens in shades of teal. Meanwhile some students explored the merging of East and West. Indian style was blended with fetish in Samina Aktar's exciting black and red rubber collection, which brought the 'Kama Sutra' to the torture dungeon. Davinder Kainth's humorous approach to what the best-dressed British-born Asian should wear included images of the Union Jack and Bollywood movies.

The highlight of the show was David Morrish's unique bridal dresses that fuse the ancient with the futuristic, using innovative pattern cutting techniques perfect for the 21st century bride.
