[alternative fashion week 2004]

For a week in March, charity Alternative Arts erects a catwalk in Spitalfieds Market and organises free lunchtime fashion shows. This year, 60 designers showed their creations through the week and, as always, this year saw some imaginative contributions from a variety of designers and colleges. Headwear was a key theme with bird cages, oversized turbans and bubble wrap-style caps all making an appearance. This year's Fashion Market - an area beside the catwalk where new designers can pay £10 a day for a stall - was also a huge success and featured some great accessories by Miko Boutique and Ruby Two Shoes.

Here is a selection of photos from the week - big thanks to SmilePlease! Scroll through the images using the 'previous' and 'next' links or click on the little thumbnail images.

"SmilePlease is a new website designed to make event photography more easily accessible. We only use top end digital cameras so that we can do complete coverage of any event from a fashion show to a wedding without having to worry about the cost of film. Prints can then be ordered directly off the website."

"We specialise in unobtrusive, quirky and candid photographs usually taken using a long lens and without flash to capture the atmosphere of an event from a respectful distance. Alternative Fashion Week is one of our favourite events and this year we stupidly decided to try and do complete coverage of the shows by photographing every collection and every single model. Despite having a camera stolen from under our noses at the end of the show on Wednesday, we ploughed on with a hire camera. We ended up taking nearly 2,500 photos of the shows, the bulk of which can be viewed or purchased online at SmilePlease."
