Join us each day this week for a full report on London's underground celebration of fashion at Spitalfields Market. Updated 7pm (GMT) daily - come back tomorrow for more!
Nestled behind London's ultra modern Liverpool Street, Spitalfields Market is an indoor haven of arts, crafts, vintage clothing and great food. The fabulous International Food Market offers a huge selection of cuisine from across the globe at bargain prices and there's even an indoor sports centre (which features a football pitch!) so you can work up an appetite before working out. Alternative Fashion Week is organised by the charity Alternative Arts. It aims to showcase the work of upcoming designers, unfettered by commercial constraint. The result is a huge mixture of fashion creativity which varies enormously in quality. Although Alternative Arts' Maggie Pinhorn claims, "This is tomorrow's generation today", not everything that makes it to the catwalk is of a high standard, or can be accurately described as fashion. The fetish wear collections hardly vary from year to year and despite explosions of flash bulbs which can be seen everytime a bottom is bared, once you've seen one PVC thong and leather corset....... But Alternative Fashion Week does offer genuinely talented designers a fantastic opportunity to show their clothes to the press and public. The show is free to participate in, designers only need to provide their clothes. This compares very favourably to London Fashion Week where the average cost of staging a collection is £20-50,000.
