Ilius Ahmed kicked off the event with Shell, a collection of curvaceous structures based on shells and human vertebrae. The range includes sexy hot pants and mini dresses in cream and terracotta with plunging necklines revealing the wearer's back. No less risqué is Rashida Kapadia's Sense of Touch, a colourful range of ragged see-trough tops teamed with neat looking A-line skirts and wide legged trousers.
Meanwhile, Caroline Bates nearly set the catwalk on fire with her 50s-inspired creations featuring huge flower prints on A-line skirts worn over taffeta petticoats. OKA, Ellie Searles' and Charlotte Rutter's label, calmed the atmosphere with a range of highly wearable outfits. Asymmetric necklines and diagonal seams in skirts and dresses give an interesting touch to the duo's contemporary clothes in subtle shades of burgundy, rose and cream.
Next in line was Katty Janneh's elegant millinery with a touch of extravagance followed by Nuada's eclectic mix of stone washed, ragged denim teamed with bondage-style tartan, moulded leather and diagonally striped tops. Less tough and more cheerful seem Faye Simpkins' offerings. Her Quaker-inspired picnic clothing is casual and fun with puffball hemlines, ruched details and delicate embroidery all in bright shades of orange and light yellow.
The only menswear range of the day was shown by Alistair King who offers casual knitwear for blokes who appreciate comfort in clothes as well as a bit of colour. Nicole Renée's clubwear and funky wedding dresses glamorously rounded off the first day of AFW.
