Last year Madonna brought henna tattooing into the mainstream. But long before Maddie went mad for this ethnic adornment, bindis were big in London. Now, skin jewellery is taking the trend a stage further. If you want to stand out from the crowd this autumn, get creative with your skin and go beyond mere make-up. The basic idea is simply to use materials to enhance your features and create a totally individual look. While most of us use make-up to define our facial features and complement our clothes, skin jewellery makes a bolder statement and it's a great option if you want to transform your face/arms/neck without permanently piercing your skin. |
|
Skin decoration is used by designers as a styling device to add another dimension to their collections and help create a strong overall look for the season. At Maria Grachvogel's spring/summer 99 catwalk show, models' skins wore incredible glittery patterns on their necks and cheeks which matched the colours of their outfits. But you don't need a professional make-up artist on hand to get the look - skin jewellery is now being sold in selected shops and it's easy to make your own. |

| Bless is a Paris-based company which offers weird skin jewellery packages that are totally unique. Each design comes with a polaroid photograph demonstrating how the piece is worn and no two designs (or polaroids!) are the same. Bless products use a huge variety of materials (including felt, cotton, metal and rope) which are fixed to the face in bizarre ways. One Bless design is a sort of postmodern eye patch that looks like a paper fish and is tied around the ear by transparent cotton and then worn across the eye. |

| For anyone who finds Bless designs too way out, there are less wacky alternatives on offer. J Maskrey has designed a range of adornments which enable you to make a feature of your eyebrow, nose, cheek, even your breasts. Alternatively, make your own skin jewellery by raiding the kitchen (use foil, a washing up cloth, black peppercorns - anything!) or the sewing box for bits and pieces which can be adapted into your own unique piece of skin jewellery. | |
| J Maskrey's Skin Jewellery range is available from Browns Focus, 38-39 South Molton Street, London W1, Tel: 0171 629 0666. Bless products are available from Browns Focus (as above) and The Pineal Eye, 49 Broadwick Street, London W1, Tel: 0171 434 2567. Prices start at £15 for both ranges. |
