Fake Tan

Sunbathing is a health and beauty no-no but can you really look good with a fake tan? Bex Harvey slaps it on all over and shows you how to get a fake tan without trauma.
Everyone knows the risks associated with sunbathing, from premature ageing to skin cancer, yet we still all want to look tanned. With so many products available, we're spoilt for choice when it comes to fake tans, which beauty experts claim to be easy to apply and look natural. But do we believe them? To save you time, money and the embarrassment of looking orange and streaky, we've tried and tested a range of fake tans to suit every pocket - so you don't have to. But first, here are some handy tips on applying a bottle tan.

[1] Ask any painter or decorator, surfaces must be properly prepared before applying paint. Just before and preferably everyday for a week leading up to slapping on the fake tan thoroughly exfoliate your skin. Do this in the bath or shower with a loofah, a body scrub (less painful) or make your own exfoliater by mixing up sea salt and baby oil. Pay extra attention to rough areas like elbows, knees and heels.

[2] Rub a light moisturiser all over your body before using a fake tan, which will help it glide on. But do let the body lotion dry thoroughly and sink into your skin first.

[3] When using fake tan on the face put some Vaseline on your eyebrows and hairline to prevent them being stained. Orange eyebrows can look very odd.

[4] Get someone to help you apply an all-over tan - it's much easier and you're more likely to get even results.

[5] The trickiest areas to apply self-tanning lotion to are the hands, feet and arms, so be extra careful. Avoid getting any tanning lotion in between the toes (even Des O'Connor isn't tanned there) and remember that tanned undersides of arms won't look very natural. Don't bother trying to tan your hands. If it goes wrong you'll be wearing gloves in summer. Hands are usually the most tanned part of the body so they probably won't need any help.

[6] Wash your (and your helper's) hands thoroughly when you're finished applying the tan. Pay special attention to palms, wrists and under your nails.

[7] Allow the fake tan lotion to dry thoroughly before getting dressed, hopping into bed or scratching. Manufacturers suggest 10-15 minutes but a good half hour is a safer bet.

[8] A fake tan takes between 3-4 days to wear off and applying more self-tanning lotion during this time will result in a darker tan.
