If you ain't got the locks you lust after then fake it baby. Sarah Louise Taylor takes a closer look at the accessory fast becoming as popular as a handbag - artificial hair.
If, like me, the word 'wig' makes you think of old ladies with hideous nylon perms, it could be time to think again. Fake hair has come a long way since the days of tacky toupees or rainbow-coloured mullets and it's now become popular with stars and stylists.
WIDTH= Personalities and pioneers of the current lust for fake locks include Jennifer Lopez, L'il Kim, Geri Haliwell, and more recently Louise Nerding and Melanie C have opted for a little extra on the crown. While celebrities have long been aware of the benefits of faking their hairstyles, the limited availability and high price has stopped most of us from experimenting with these add-ons. But as hair technology has developed the choice of extensions, weaves and pieces has increased and the prices lowered. Now fake hair is within almost everyone's reach. The best thing about fake hair is that you don't have to take it seriously anymore - blatantly false is fun.

Of course, wacking a wig on top of your head does not equal great hair, no matter how perfect the cut. Unless you're prepared to spend a fortune or seek professional advice, it is a harsh but true fact that wigs are usually noticeable. If you're gonna opt for one, it is probably wise to choose a wig that's clearly fake but also funky or just plain mad.

For a more subtle effect, hair extensions are a good choice and advances in hair technology mean that they can both look fantastic and last a long time. No self-respecting hair stylist will add extensions which are more than twice as long as your natural hair, so don't expect to have tumbling tresses instantly. If your hairdresser does offer to give you floor length extensions, beware - they'll probably fall out much faster than you'd like them to. There's also a danger that you could be allergic to the glue which they use to fix the extensions (someone recently died after suffering such a reaction) so make sure that you go to a reputable salon and don't be afraid to ask questions.
