Ditch retro styling this season and treat your face like a blank canvas. Sarah Louise Taylor points out the latest, futuristic make-up looks.

You can blame it on Baywatch or Gisele 'Boobs from Brazil' Bundchen, but the tanned beach babe look always enjoys a revival as soon as the sun puts his hat on. However, those that are tired of dusting themselves with potfuls of bronzer will be glad to hear that there is an alternative because this season, make-up has gone mental so it's time for some freestyle face art.

On the spring/summer 2001 catwalks of top designers - including Hussein Chalayan, Dai Rees, Martin Kidman and Tristan Webber - models appeared wearing make-up which resembled modern art and forward-thinking fashionistas are already copying the trend by getting creative with their cosmetic kits. The key elements of face art are fairly simple as the only rule is that there are no rules. Make-up should be experimental, vivid and bold and the secret to creating a unique look is to think of your face as a canvas and get scrawling. To ensure high impact, use bold colours such as marigold yellow, fluorescent pink and orange, poppy red and aqua blue.

For some inspiration, take guidance from Luella Bartley who covered her models' faces with Dr Martens style footprints at her recent show or copy Marjan Djodjov Pejoski and apply cartoon tattoo transfers to your cheeks. Alternatively, those based in the US can create a pretty pattern on their mugs with face stencils and spray paints which are now available from Dinair.com.

The best bit about face art is that you can be innovative without rushing out and buying new products so rummage through your make-up bag and see what you've got. To get brighter shades out of pots of powder colour you already have, try applying them to your face with a wet brush or for a sheen effect, mix up an old blusher or eye shadow with some Vaseline and smooth over a selected area of your face.

Above all, just have some fun with your make-up and play around until you find an effect that you're happy with.
