COCKTAIL cosmetics

Shake and stir your make-up bag and get reckless with the hot shot colours of summer.
Sarah Louise Taylor serves you cocktail cosmetics.
High definition, metallic sheens, gorgeous gloss and clashing shades are the top tipples of this season's look. Cocktail cosmetics aren't for lightweights so don't mix your make-up if you can't handle it.

The key ingredients for the cocktail look are simple. Use the most outrageous colours you can find and apply them thickly but neatly. Most of the large make-up companies have caught onto the tacky trend and now a whole host of previously banished colours are available everywhere. To achieve the look, wack 'Club Tropicana' on your CD player, then apply a light foundation base to your face. If your foundation is a little too greasy, gently dust over with a very light coating of powder. After that, you're pretty much free to do all of the crazy make-up tricks you haven't tried since you were a kid. You are aiming for a defined look rather than a smudgy one, so start off with pencils for the lips and eyes.

If you're daring enough then make sure that they don't match anything else you intend to apply. Liner pencils should be used to draw a precise line around your features but you can also use them to adjust their appearance. If you'd like to accentuate your eyes then gently draw a triangle of colour streaking upwards from the outer corner of your eye. If you'd prefer your mouth to look fuller then use a fairly light shade of liner rather than a heavy one.
Next, apply your eyeshadow of choice in one big block of colour. No matter how fashionable it may ever become, don't use colour all the way from your lid to your eyebrow unless it's a very neutral tone. Otherwise the cocktail look will change from 'Copa Cabana' to 'complete cock up' in a matter of moments. It's usually best to apply the shadow across the bone above your lid in a clean swoop. Favourable shadow shades of the moment include lilac, banana yellow and lime green.

Next add lashings and lashings of mascara in any color you fancy but black or brown are actually the only shades which really pump up your lashes. If you're already feeling a little woozy at this point then just add some lip gloss and a light coating of Vaseline across your eyebrows and then stop. If you think your hard enough to take a little more then start plastering on the lipstick layers. In particular shades of red, fuchsia pink and orange come highly recommended but the most important lip tip is to add tons of gloss until your lips are practically paralysed under the weight.

To personalise the look, try alternating colours to find the best ones that suit you and then once you've completely overdone it, you're finished.
