Aging Beauty

Fighting the forces of beauty fascism.

Outrageous Agers is the title of a new exhibition by two women. Bex Harvey finds that even in the 21st century, aging is still a feminist issue.

We're a society obsessed with youthfulness. We consider Kate Moss' scrubbed face and taut body beautiful because it has the hallmarks of youth. Even voluptuous women have to look youthful - take Melinda Messenger's baby face. And this concept of beauty only applies to women. Sean Connery is a sex symbol despite his wrinkles and baldness, whilst Joan Collins has the help of surgeons and wigs. Two artists, Rosy Martin (53) and Kay Goodridge (46) feel so strongly about the way older women are conceived that they put together an exhibition, titled 'Outrageous Agers', exploring and exposing the aging female body.
